NICOLA BIBBY

My passion is feltmaking: taking wisps of wool and, using soap, water and gentle agitation, creating a totally original and unique piece of fabric.  It is such a versatile technique.  You can make gossamer fine cobweb scarves, or thick durable fabric for bags and slippers, or mould it to create 3D sculptures.

I tend to alternate between wet felting (making scarves, bags and pictures) and needle felting (creating birds, ladybirds and bees).  My inspiration comes from the beauty of the natural world.  Favourite themes at the moment include wild flowers, seed pods and butterflies but this changes with the changing seasons.

Currently, I am enjoying experimenting with nuno felt; that is combining fine silks and other natural materials with the wool during the wet felting process. I love the texture effects when the silks are shrunk and crinkled with the wool.

I will be demonstrating both wet felting and needle felting techniques throughout Bucks Open Studios, so come along and see how it’s done!
